Beech defeats La Vergne 6-1 to claim Region 5-AAA crown
HENDERSONVILLE — For the second time this season, Carissa Lowery and the Beech High Schooll softball squad kept La Vergne from claiming a tournament title when the Lady Buccaneers captured the Region 5-AAA crown with a 6-1 win Wednesday.

The game was a rematch of the District 9-AAA championship where Beech (40-6 ) won 8-0 and also marked the fifth time La Vergne (16-21) had been defeated by the Lady Bucs this season.

All five wins over La Vergne have come behind the strong arm of Lowery, and Wednesday’s game was no exception. Lowery (31-5) gave up only six hits and solid Beech defense kept Wolverine runners from scoring.

“Defensively, I thought we played very well today,” said Beech coach Kristi Brinkley. “We also scored runs when we needed to and managed to pull out the win.”

Beech scored in each of the first two innings with a pair of hits from Camille Harris and Jennifer Grybash. Harris doubled down the right-field line to score Grybash in the first inning, then Grybash hit in a run in the second with a single to center.

After the Lady Bucs added two more runs in the fourth, Beech’s Kristin Stanfill put the Wolverines away with a two-run home run over the left-field fence.

La Vergne’s lone run came in the fourth with an RBI infield hit from Ashley Camp. Burton, who scored the run, had earlier reached base on a hit to left, followed by a bunt single from Shaun Cotten.

Cotten and Camp led off the sixth with a pair of infield hits, but Grybash caught a line drive off the bat of Amanda Snider and doubled up Cotten at second. The Rines would not get another hit or scoring opportunity the rest of the game.

Stanfill led Beech with three RBIs and two hits. Grybash also finished with two hits.

Crystal Burton, Cotten, and Camp recorded two hits each for La Vergne.

Beech will host the first round of the substate tournament versus Hunters Lane Friday at 4:00. La Vergne will face Overton in substate play Friday.

Beech blanks Lady Lions
CHATTANOOGA - Columbia Central's trek toward a state championship ran into a roadblock Wednesday morning.

Hendersonville Beech pitcher Carissa Lowry struck out 12 Lady Lions to lead the Lady Bucs to a 5-0 victory in the Class AAA state tournament winners' bracket.

"What we have to remember is back in "97 when we were eliminated, (Beech) came out of the losers' bracket to win the state championship," said Columbia head coach Roger White. "We can do the same thing. I think we'll bounce back and be okay."

The loss puts Central (24-16) into this morning's 10:30 a.m. elimination game against Nashville Overton, who outlasted William Blount 2-1 in nine innings Wednesday night. The Lady Lions defeated the Lady Bobcats 2-1 earlier in the season.

If the Lady Lions win, they would advance to Thursday's 4 p.m. losers' bracket semifinals against the winner of Jefferson County-Soddy Daisy/Collierville.

The game was scoreless until a pivotal series of events occurred in the third inning.

Columbia led off its half of third with Ashley Hodge's double to rightcenter field. Unfortunately for the Lady Lions, Hodge never advanced any further than second.

"That hurt not getting (Hodge) in," White said. "It's one of those things where if you get a run, it could have changed the momentum."

In the bottom half of the frame, Beech made its move.

Cristin James led off with a double to leftcenter. Jennifer Grybash followed with a single to center. Courtney Boynton then reached on a perfectly executed a suicide squeeze that plated James.

Kristin Stanfill added a pair of runs with a single to center. Stanfill would later score on an error to give the Lady Bucs a 4-0 lead.

Central's only other real threat at scoring came in the fourth inning as Nikki Candler and Kacy Walker each reached base, but their hits were packaged around three strikeouts.

Beech (43-6) loaded the bases in the fifth but only managed to tack on one run as Tiffany Childress was able to retire the last two batters of the inning.

Childress took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits with six strikeouts.

Jacqueline Stinson, Childress, Walker and Hodge each had one hit for Central.

Lowry earned the complete-game victory, scattering four hits with 12 strikeouts.

"You've got to put the ball in play, and we weren't able to do that," White said. "They were able to put the ball in play and put some pressure on us. That's how they scored their runs."

Boynton's three hits and Stanfill's two hits paced the Lady Bucs' offensive attack.

"There a great team," White said. "They hit the ball well, and they played good defense."

Beech Shocks Soddy-Daisy In AAA Softball Opener
Union Signee Goes 4-For-4 With Both RBI In 2-1 Win
by Stan Crawley
posted May 25, 2004

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- Beech senior Amy Chatham and her teammates knew they would be seeing a lot of outside pitches from Soddy-Daisy freshman Nikki Waters on Tuesday night.

Consequently, they had been looking at outside stuff while preparing to play the Lady Trojans in the first round of the Class AAA state softball tournament. All the practice paid dividends.

Chatham hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh and Beech surprised defending state champion Soddy-Daisy, 2-1, in the opening round of AAA play.

Soddy-Daisy will play in the losers bracket at noon central time on Wednesday against Collierville, which lost by 3-2 on Tuesday to Knox Central. Central will play Beech at 2 p.m.
Chatham, who is headed to Union University on a softball scholarship, also had an RBI double in the fifth inning. She was 4-for-4 with the triple, double and two singles.

"Maybe I should have walked her in the seventh,'' Soddy-Daisy coach Clifford Kirk said. "You win some, you lose some. That's how it goes.''

Said Chatham, "This feels pretty good because Waters can bring it. We're pumped. I've been practicing hitting that outside pitch. I couldn't hit it for a long time.''

Kassie Stanfill was the winning pitcher for Beech (39-7). She gave up seven hits and struck out eight.

Waters (35-4) gave up eight hits and struck out six after pitching a perfect game last week in the sectional.

"We knew they were tough,'' Kirk said. "We beat them in a play-day game and we beat them 1-0 in the Worth Tournament. They are a good hitting team.

"I thought we were the best two teams in the AAA tournament. It's a shame we had to play in the first round.''

Soddy-Daisy (47-6) scored its only in the third inning when Lindsey Stiles led off with a single and scored on an RBI single by Katie Blevins.

"This bunch has never been in the losers bracket here,'' Kirk said, "so I don't know how they will react. We just didn't execute tonight and it killed us. We couldn't bunt.

"But we'll be back. We've been in the losers bracket in years past and won. We've got a good enough team to do it.''

Said Chatham, "I see Soddy-Daisy in the championship game, no doubt. They're unstoppable. Their freshmen are awesome.

"A lot of people thought we'd be nervous to play them, but we were pumped. They had beaten us twice, but that had everybody up for the game.''

Beech Shocks Soddy-Daisy In 12 Innings In Class AAA Softball
by Stan Crawley
posted May 25, 2005

MEMPHIS -- Defending state champion Beech scored two runs on a fluke bunt in the top of the 12th inning and shocked Soddy-Daisy, 3-2, in the Class AAA state softball tournament Wednesday afternoon.

In a game that took more than three hours to play, Nikki Waters (23-3), a sophomore, struck out 21 for Soddy-Daisy and Kassie Stanfill (36-13), a University of Louisville signee, struck out 18 for Beech.

Soddy-Daisy (44-4-1) dropped into the loser's bracket and will play either Collierville or Powell on Thursday at 1 p.m. eastern

Beech (36-13) moved to the winner's bracket final and will play either Red Bank or Rossview on Thursday night at 8 eastern.

Since 1999, Soddy-Daisy has won three state championships (1999, 2000, 2003) and Beech has won two (2001 and 2004).

Wednesday's game was a classic with Soddy-Daisy taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Stacie Fairbanks doubled and scored on an error by Stanfill on Lyndsey Stiles' bunt.

In the top of the seventh, Beech tied the game. Stanfill had a one-out walk and Colby Wherry singled. Brooke Overby then grounded to shortstop, but the ball was booted by Lauren Upton.

Ashlee Warren then lifted a fly ball into short right field. Right-fielder Fairbanks made the catch, but bumped into second-baseman Kacy Cooper. That allowed Stanfill to score from third.

The international tie-breaker rule came into play in the top of the 10th, with a runner starting the inning at second base.

Both Stanfill and Waters worked out of jams in the 10th and 11th innings.

In the 12th, however, the first batter popped a bunt over Waters' head, placing a runner on first and third.

With runners on second and third and no outs, Brittany Ailello pinch-hit for Beech. Coming back from an ACL injury, Ailello had not been able to bat.

Still, she pushed a bunt over Waters' head and two runs scored.

"Really, those were both fluky bunts,'' Soddy-Daisy coach Clifford Kirk said. "But they were the difference in the game. Those two bunts were the only thing that hurt us. Nikki did a great job.''

In the bottom of the 12th with the tie-breaker runner on second, Upton led off with an RBI double. She was held up while streaking to third by Kirk, then was tagged out trying to get back to second base.

"I was afraid she wasn't going to make it to third and I had some good hitters coming up,'' Kirk said. "She doesn't have a lot of speed, but I did that. I've done good things, but sometimes you make bad decisions.''

Beech had only five hits in 12 innings and Soddy-Daisy managed only six off Stanfill, who also beat the Lady Trojans twice last year in the state tournament. Stanfill lost most of her teammates off that team and is Beech's only senior, but clearly has Soddy-Daisy's number.

"We just won't stay off her rise ball,'' Kirk said. "But we're OK. We just didn't execute today. We just couldn't get our bunts down.''

Red Bank Shocks Beech, Moves To Class AAA Championship Game
by Stan Crawley

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- With the game tied at 2, Red Bank's Kristen Walker was hit-by-a-pitch leading off the bottom of the seventh Thursday night.

Standing near the dugout, Red Bank's Martha Davis said, "If the first batter gets on, we usually win.''

After Amber Myers struck out, Davis came to the plate against Beech star pitcher Kassie Stanfill, a University of Louisville signee who beat Soddy-Daisy on Wednesday.

Davis, who had a key double earlier in the game, sliced a line-drive down the line and over the right-fielder's head. Walker scored from first and Red Bank moved into the championship game in the Class AAA state softball tournament.

Red Bank (27-13-2) defeated Beech, 3-2, and will play for the state title at 7:30 p.m. eastern on Friday against either Beech or Soddy-Daisy.

Beech (34-14) and Soddy-Daisy (45-4-1) will play in the loser's bracket final on Friday morning at 11 eastern.

"It was an outside fastball, I think,'' Davis said. "She threw hard tonight, but it was not hard to see or judge.''

Said Red Bank coach Mandi Cline, "Martha, she's awesome. She's awesome all-around, defensively and hitting. She's the one you want in there in the clutch.

"When their right-fielder took a step in, I knew we had it right there. Martha had two awesome shots
tonight.''

Red Bank took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Myers singled and Davis hit a ground-rule double. Both runs scored when Brittany Kopscak's ground ball went through the legs of the Beech second-baseman.

Beech pulled within 2-1 when Lauren Baker tripled and scored on a throwing error in the top of the fifth.

In the top of the seventh, Beech tied the game when Tara Carver doubled, was sacrificed to third by Baker and scored on Holly Herman's sacrifice fly.

That set the stage for Red Bank to turn the game over to Davis in the bottom of the inning.

"Our goal this year was to get here, but I never would have believed we would be in the final,'' Davis said. "It's a great feeling.''

Red Bank freshman Kelly Troglin pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits and striking out four.

"Kelly did her job tonight,'' Cline said. "Who we pitch tomorrow will depend on who we play. Soddy-Daisy hasn't seen much of Kelly, and Kim (Patterson) has a better change and could keep Beech off-balance better.''

Red Bank, however, is 0-4 against Soddy-Daisy this season.

"The way my girls are playing, we can beat Soddy-Daisy if we get them,'' Cline said.

Said Davis, "We've been overlooked and the underdog and we've surprised a lot of people. It doesn't matter if we play Soddy-Daisy or Beech. If we bring our game, we can beat whoever.''

Stanfill gave up six hits and struck out eight.

MURFREESBORO -- Beech scored three runs in the first inning and never stopped hitting in a 12-2, six-inning win over Collierville in the first round of the Class AAA softball tournament Wednesday. Collierville committed eight errors and pitcher Lindsey Thomas was unable to stop the combination of Haylee Rogers and Ginny Carroll, who totaled seven hits and five RBIs. “We were just focused from the very beginning,” Carroll said. “It’s a great way to start a tournament, with momentum. Hopefully we can keep it going.” Collierville’s eight errors led to four unearned runs. “We made too many mistakes,” Dragons coach Mike Bradley said. “We should not get 10-runned by anybody. It’s no disrespect to them but we’re better than what we showed today.” Beech pitcher Kat Banks pitched a complete game, striking out six, allowing six hits and walking two. Beech coach Wayne Smith said, “She settled in up until the sixth inning when she lost the strike zone a little bit, but I told her what I liked was that she got out of the bases loaded. She’s done that several times before.” The win sets up a Beech versus Soddy-Daisy matchup in the second round Wednesday night. The two teams have a history of playing each other in the state tournament. “We can’t wait,” Smith said. “Our girls are fired up and ready to play and can’t wait to play this type of game.” Collierville hopes to rebound and stay alive in an elimination game against Daniel Boone.

MURFREESBORO – Soddy Daisy flexed its muscles against Beech Wednesday night, hitting two home runs on its way to a 6-2 victory. “We just got outplayed and out hit tonight,” said Beech Coach Wayne Smith. “Defensively I think we were pretty solid, but the two home runs they hit really took the air out of us, and I don’t think we ever really recovered.” Soddy Daisy (50-2) got on the board in the first when Alex Everett, who was 4-for-4 in the game with 3 RBIs, hit a solo shot to make it 1-0. The Lady Trojans added three more in the top of the third when Kali Henderson hit a three-run home run to put Soddy Daisy up 4-0.Beech (44-5-1) finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth Jule Kranz doubled to right center, and then was driven in by Alex Banks to cut the lead to 4-1. Soddy Daisy put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh Everett singled down the third base line to knock two more runs home to give the Lady Trojans a 6-1 advantage. Beech didn’t go down without a fight however, as Ginny Carroll led off with a triple over the right fielders head, and then Kassidy McCoy singled to centerfield to score Carroll and make it 6-2. “I reminded our girls tonight after the game what happened to us last year,” said Smith. “We beat Riverdale by the same score in the virtually the same game and they came back through the loser’s bracket and ended up winning it all. “I’m not saying the same thing will happen, but I do think we have as good of a chance as anyone else does.” Soddy Daisy will move on to take on last year’s state champion, Riverdale, at 7 tonight. Beech will take on Brighton at 10 a.m.

Chris Lynn/News Examiner May 27, 2010
MURFREESBORO -- The Beech softball team came back with a vengeance Thursday afternoon to beat Brighton 14-0 in five innings to advance to the losers bracket semifinal game of the AAA state tournament.  “I think this was good for the whole team after what happened last night,” said senior Kayla Toney, speaking of Wednesday night’s loss to Soddy-Daisy. “We didn’t hit well as a team, so hopefully we’ll take the confidence we got from this team and have it carry over for the rest of the tournament.” Beech sophomore Alex Banks got credit for the win, pitching five innings, striking out three batters, and allowing only four hits in her first appearance as a pitcher in the state tournament. “This was my first time in the circle in the state tournament, but I really just treated it like any other game,” said Banks. “I was ready to go, and even told Coach Smith I wanted to pitch, so I was glad when he gave me the opportunity.”  Beech (45-5-1) got its first runs in the top of the third, scoring five runs off of three hits. Toney drove in the first run on a single with two on, and Haylee Rogers followed suit, singling to right to drive in another run. A wild pitch scored the third run, and then Kassidy McCoy doubled to left to drive in two more. The Lady Buccaneers added three more in the top of the fourth on Toney’s three run home run that measured over 250 feet to make it 8-0.  “As soon as I hit it I knew it was gone because it felt so good off the bat,” said Toney. “I’ve really been in a slump lately, so I was glad to finally get a hold of one and hopefully it will bring me out of what I’ve been in.” Beech put it away in the top of the fifth, scoring six more runs on six hits and capitalizing on two Lady Cardinal errors led by McCoy, who again added two more RBI’s for a total of four for the game. “After what happened last night I really expected something like this from this team,” said Smith. “Our focus and goal hasn’t changed since the first of the season, we just have a loss to go along with that goal. “Our backs are against the wall, but not in a bad way, we just have to perform and play our game and not look any further than the next game.” Beech will take on the winner of Jefferson County and Daniel Boone at 5 p.m. today with the winner advancing to losers bracket final to take on the loser of Riverdale and Soddy-Daisy Friday.

Chris Lynn/News Examiner  May 27, 2010
MURFREESBORO – Beech sophomore Alex Banks has pitched her share of innings, but never at the state tournament, that is until Thursday. With Beech’s 11-1 win over Jefferson County in the semifinals of the losers bracket of the AAA state tournament, she now has a pair of wins to show for it also. “Alex had another great outing in our game tonight, but because she isn’t used to pitching as much as she did today, she got a little tired in the sixth inning,” said Beech Coach Wayne Smith. “Kat came in and finished the game off in the seventh, but only threw about 12 pitches, which was enough to work out any soreness that might have been there and both will be ready for tomorrow.” After an anemic performance at the plate against Soddy-Daisy Wednesday Beech put together 24 hits in Thursday’s two-game span and outscored its opponents 25-1 to advance to Friday’s losers bracket finals at 10 a.m. against Riverdale. “We had more than an off day at the plate (Wednesday), so we wanted to come out today and prove to ourselves that we’re the same team we’ve been all year,” said senior Virginia Tech signee Kat Banks. “Now we have a little momentum to carry over to tomorrow’s game, but our motto all year has been one game at a time, one pitch at a time, and that’s still our approach.” Alex Banks improved to 18-1 on the season with the win over Jefferson County, pitching six innings, striking out one and giving up just five hits and one earned run, and her older sister Kat finished things off, pitching the last inning, striking out one and giving up just one hit. Beech (46-5-1) scored three runs off of two errors and RBIs by Kat Banks, and Kayla Toney, who had a triple to right center field to put the Lady Bucs up 3-0. Jefferson County scored its only run in the bottom of the first Laura Dukes singled to left to drive in the run and make it 3-1. Beech added a run each in the top of the third and fourth innings and added another two runs in the top of the fifth. The Lady Bucs put the game away in the top of the seventh, dashing any Jefferson County hopes after scoring five runs highlighted by Kat Banks' three run home-run, making it 11-1. “The girls know what has to be done and they’re focused and still have one thing on their minds,” said Smith. “They have wanted a state title for the last three years and still think they have just as good a chance as anyone here. “We’re down to just three teams and anything can happen, we know that first hand.”

Lady Bucs roll past Riverdale in losers' bracket finals

By Chris Lynn
The News Examiner

MURFREESBORO – Earlier in the day Friday Beech sent the defending state champion Lady Warriors from Riverdale packing with a 12-5 victory in the AAA loser’s bracket finals. “Our girls haven’t forgotten what happened last year, so there was a little revenge factor,” said Beech Coach Wayne Smith. “We really wanted to get this win, but when it comes right down to it Riverdale was just another team that was in the way of our main goal. “We just wanted the opportunity to be able to play for a state title again and now we have that, so the rest is up to us.” Beech (48-5-1) got off to a quick start, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first when Kayla Toney drove in a pair of runs with a double to left center to make it 2-0. Riverdale (56-8-1) took the lead in the top of the second, scoring three runs, but the Lady Buccaneers battled back to retake the lead in the bottom of the inning when Heather Montgomery singled in the first run, and Rena Cothron doubled in the second run to again give Beech a one run lead, 4-3. The Lady Warriors scored two more in the top of the fourth to take their second lead of the game, but the Lady Bucs answered back in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run to again tie the game 5-5. Kassidy McCoy led off that inning with a double that bounced over the fence in center, and then Ginny Carroll doubled to left to drive McCoy in for the score. Riverdale had another chance in the bottom of the fifth when Jordan Abell looked as if she had connected for a homerun in left field, but Beech sophomore Heather Montgomery tracked the ball down and made the catch stretching over the fence for an out. "I really thought it was a home run when it was hit, but I was able to track it down and the crowd and team just went crazy,” said Montgomery. “I really didn’t know I even had it until it feel in my glove, but I’m glad I was able to track it down because it seemed like it really picked everyone up a little.” That may have been an understatement because Beech exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth off of four hits, one error, and three walks. Alex Banks led off with a single to short, and Montgomery followed with a single to right field, which led Riverdale to make a pitching change. Samantha Hoadwonic came in and pitched to nine batters, getting just one out, and walking three, allowing six of the seven runs to score.

Alex Banks hurls Beech to blowout wins Thursday

By Chris Lynn
The News Examiner

MURFREESBORO – Beech sophomore Alex Banks had a conversation with Lady Buccaneers Coach Wayne Smith Wednesday. She told him, in no uncertain terms, that she was ready to go if the team needed her to pitch. Smith listened, starting her in both elimination games Thursday and she responded, by getting a pair of wins, 14-0 against Brighton, and then 11-1 over Jefferson County. “When a sophomore comes to you and shows that kind of confidence knowing what’s on the line, I tend to take a request like that rather seriously,” said Smith. “She did a good job all day of hitting her spots and staying ahead in the count, and our offense seemed to follow her lead. “Defensively we’ve been sharp the whole tournament, but our bats went to sleep against Soddy-Daisy Wednesday, and it was a welcome relief to see them come back to life today.” Alex Banks, who improved to 18-1 with the two wins, said that her approach to the day was like any other game she’s pitched this season. “I really didn’t think of today’s games different than I do any time, but at the same time I knew what was on the line,” said Banks. “I just knew I was ready to pitch and wanted the ball, so when Coach Smith came to me and asked if I was ready I told him sure, and I think things went pretty well.” After an anemic performance at the plate against Soddy-Daisy Wednesday, producing only four hits in seven innings, Beech put together 24 hits in Thursday’s two game span in just 12 innings, and outscored its opponents 25-1 to advance to Friday’s loser’s bracket finals. The Lady Bucs also had two three run home runs, one by Kat Banks, and the other by fellow senior Kayla Toney. After the way we played Wednesday I think it was important for us to come out today and prove to ourselves that we’re still the same team we’ve been all season,” said Banks. “Saying that we had an off day (Wednesday) is really an understatement, but hopefully our performance in these two games will give us some confidence to take with us into tomorrow’s contest.” Beech (47-5-1) got its first runs in the top of the third, scoring five runs off of three hits. Toney drove in the first run on a single with two on, and Haylee Rogers followed suit, singling to right to drive in another run. A wild pitch scored the third run, and then Kassidy McCoy doubled to left to drive in two more. The Lady Buccaneers added three more in the top of the fourth on Toney’s three-run home run that easily cleared the 200-foot fence to make it 8-0. “As soon as I hit it I knew it was gone because it felt so good off the bat,” said Toney. “I’ve really been in a slump lately, so I was glad to finally get a hold of one and hopefully it will bring me out of what I’ve been in.” Beech put it away in the top of the fifth, scoring six more runs on six hits and capitalizing on two Lady Cardinal errors, led by McCoy, who again added two more RBI’s for a total of four for the game. The Lady Buccaneers took advantage of a four hour intermission and came back refreshed to get their second win of the day 11-1 over Jefferson County. Beech scored three runs off of two errors and RBI’s by Kat Banks, and Kayla Toney, who had a triple to right centerfield to put the Lady Bucs up 3-0 in the top of the first inning. Jefferson County scored its only run in the bottom of the first Laura Dukes singled to left to drive in the run and make it 3-1. Beech added a run each in the top of the third and fourth innings and then added another two runs in the top of the fifth to increase the lead to 7-1. The Lady Buccaneers put the game away and dashed any hopes of a Jefferson County comeback in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs, highlighted by Kat Banks’ three-run home run.

MURFREESBORO – The AAA state softball championship between Beech and Soddy-Daisy was delayed due to Lady Trojan Coach Clifford Kirk being late turning in his line up. Unfortunately for Beech (48-6-1), this proved to be the only miscue of the night for Soddy-Daisy. Soddy-Daisy junior Alex Everett went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and four RBIs led the Lady Trojans to its seventh state championship with an 8-5 win over Beech. The appearance marked the third straight runner-up finish for the Lady Buccaneers. “To be in a state championship for three years and not come away with one is tough,” Beech Coach Wayne Smith stated. “Winning one of these things is a big deal with the effort the kids put in, and it’s hard not getting one.” Beech suffered a 6-2 loss to Soddy-Daisy (52-2) in the second game of the state tournament on Wednesday. However, after the game, starting pitcher Kelsey Nunley suffered a lacerated finger on her pitching hand in a post-game celebration, forcing her off the mound in favor of freshman Tori Denayer. Denayer (21-1) proved to be just good enough on the hill, while the Lady Trojan offense proved to be too potent for the Lady Buccaneers. Denayer threw seven innings, giving up five earned runs off seven hits. “We had to throw our freshman, (Denayer) but she got a lot of experience this year because we alternate pitchers so much,” Kirk said. “Beech is a really good team and hits it well, but our kids did a good job. Following a leadoff double by Brooke Ward, Everett singled her in, giving the Lady Trojans a 1-0 lead. Beech quickly answered in the home half of the inning when senior Rena’ Cothron’s squeeze bunt scored sophomore Heather Montgomery, who led off the inning with a triple. Beech’s fortunes quickly turned in the top half of the second when Soddy-Daisy freshman Cassidy Hackney hit a bases-loaded double, scoring three runs and giving the Lady Trojans a 4-1 lead. Everett followed with a RBI single to give the hosts a 5-1 lead going into the bottom half of the second inning. Soddy-Daisy chased Beech starting pitcher Kat Banks (28-5) in the top half of the third after giving up a lead-off walk and a single. Sophomore Alex Banks was brought on with runners on first and second with no one out and retired the side, keeping the Lady Buccaneers in the game. “Kat has pitched quite a bit this year, but we have faith in Alex, who wants the ball every time out,” Smith said. “Alex pitched both games yesterday because Kat is tired, but you have to go with your number one in the last game.” Added Alex Banks, “I knew that we had to hold them and that it was going to be tough. I just tried to hit some spots and move it around to where they weren’t and tried to keep it there.” In relief, Banks threw five innings, giving up three hits and three unearned runs. An error by Beech led to three unearned runs, highlighted by a two-run homer by Everett that gave Soddy-Daisy an 8-1 lead. In the fourth, Denayer issued back-to-back walks to Cothron and Kat Banks and Kayla Toney ripped a single to left to load up the bases for sophomore Jule Kranz, who hit a sharp single that was misplayed by the left fielder, scoring three runs and cutting the lead to 8-4. Kranz later scored on a single to Kassidy McCoy. “I felt we had a really good chance after that inning,” Alex Banks said. “We had momentum after that, but it just didn’t happen.” Added Smith, “It hurt that this bunch of seniors didn’t get to win a state. The character and the morals of these girls are great and the seniors (Kat Banks, Cothron, Haylee Rogers, Toney, Ginny Carroll, and Carly Edwards) have been wonderful and kept the tradition alive at Beech.” The loss marks Beech’s fifth time as runners up (1998, 1999, 2008-2010). Beech won state championships in 1997, 2001, and 2004.
