"Our defense played hard in the first half, holding them to a 3-0 lead," Beech Coach Anthony Crabtree said. "They're just better than us. They've got athletes and are sound up front."

Once their offense came alive, the defending state champions pulled away from their in-county rivals. The Beech High School defense held Station Camp offense in check until that point in a 31-11 District 9-3A victory Friday. The Buccaneers (3-1 overall, 2-0 district) won their third straight against the host Bison (1-3, 1-1). The Bucs opened the game with an 11-play drive that concluded with an Alec Willett 34-yard field goal.

After two drives into Station Camp territory resulted in no points, Beech attempted a punt return and fumbled the ball to Station Camp at its 18. However, Station Camp failed to move the ball and settled for a Kasey Kammerzell 43-yard field goal with 56 seconds left in the half tieing the game at 3-3.  Beech defenseman Jeffrey Hunter recorded an eight-yard sack of Station Camp quarterback Nick Beach on second down to force the Bison into long yardage. That gave Jarod Neal and the Beech offense enough time to move 75 yards down the field on five pass plays concluding with a 10-yard touchdown strike to Max Zinchini with three seconds left. That gave Beech the lead for good at halftime 10-3.

“That was a huge drive for us,” said Anthony Crabtree, Beech head coach. “We had not worked on that (two-minute offense) a lot and were scared to get in it. Jarod did a good job managing our offense for that amount of time and putting it in the end zone.” Neal completed 12-of-15 passes for 176 yards, including six to Zinchini for 99 yards. Taylor Cash also had three catches for 39 yards for Beech. “If you get a touchdown there, that breathes new life into you,” said Station Camp head coach Shaun Hollinsworth. “We’re killing ourselves with mental mistakes. Good teams like Beech make those plays when they get the opportunities.” The Beech ground game then revved up in the second half when a few key players returned after missing parts of the first half for disciplinary reasons. Beech tailback Travis Haymer gained all of his 101 yards in the second half on nine carries.

The Bucs pulled away in the third quarter with two quick touchdowns. Haymer broke free for a 39-yard scamper with 7:27 left in the third and Devonte’ Cobb intercepted a Beach pass and took it 23 yards to the house to put Beech up 24-3 after the third. “Sometimes, when people get hurt or whatever the deal was, someone has to go in and fill those shoes,” Crabtree said. “We did not move the ball as well without Travis. But that is part of it.” Neal concluded Beech’s scoring in the fourth when he scored from 17 yards out. Station Camp then scored its lone touchdown after chewing up 10 minutes when Jacob Falls hauled in a 2-yard pass from Beach on third-and-goal with 2:11 left in the game.

Overall, Beech outgained Station Camp, 364-143 in total offense including 218-28 in the first half. The Bucs finished with 20 first downs to nine for the Bison. Cash stopped DeMarquise Johnson in the flats on a 4th-and-7 pass late in the third. “Of all the drives on fourth down, that felt like one of the biggest one we’ve had this season,” Cash said. “That stopped their momentum. When I saw the quarterback drop back and throw it to him, I knew I was going to lay the wood on him.” Both teams conclude non-district action this Friday at 7 p.m. Beech goes to White House and Station Camp plays host to Blackman.

Cherry rushed for all of his 63 yards on 11 first-half carries, and Cobb caught two passes for 60 yards before halftime. “That’s what it’s all about,” noted Crabtree. “Those guys who don’t have a lot of experience – like Justin – have to step up. When he gets an opportunity, he has to continue to step up and make plays. I think he got better from last week to this week.” The Blue Devils actually struck first, when junior fullback Alan Cope broke loose for a 49-yard touchdown run with 3:25 remaining in the first quarter. The White House defense forced a punt four plays later, but an illegal participation penalty allowed Beech (4-1) to resume its possession, which ended with a touchdown. “We played hard,” pointed out Blue Devils’ head coach Jeff Porter. “We played better than we did last week (in a 28-21 loss at Greenbrier).

“We made a mistake with 12 people on the field when we had the lead at 7-0. That was a big play in the game.” Following a 17-yard completion from Jarod Neal to Dewayne Fleming, Cherry ripped off a 33-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter, taking a toss sweep and maneuvering his way along the visitors’ sideline. “I got knocked, and I was going to the sideline,” explained Cherry, who scored his second career touchdown (with his first being a 15-yard scoring run in a 48-6 win over visiting Clarksville Northeast earlier this season). “I caught my balance and turned on the jets.” The Bucs mounted a 15-play, 85-yard scoring drive on their final first-half possession, which consumed more than seven minutes of play. Cobb caught a 40-yard pass on a third-and-8 play, one of four third-down conversions during the progression. Max Zinchini’s 1-yard touchdown run ended it, and the second of Alec Willett’s five successful point-after touchdown kicks gave Beech a 14-7 halftime lead. White House (3-2) moved into Blue Devil territory on the opening possession of the second half, thanks to a 33-yard pass from Heath Johnson to junior classmate Trent McEwen. However, Buccaneer senior Daniel Davidson intercepted a fourth-down pass four plays later. Haymer made his presence felt immediately, carrying the football on the next three plays and covering 77 yards to the end zone. The third carry went for a 44-yard touchdown. Beech took advantage of a short punt to regain possession at the Blue Devil 37 yard line later in the third quarter. The Bucs reached the end zone with seven consecutive running plays, capped by Haymer’s 9-yard touchdown. Haymer finished with a game-high 103 yards rushing on 10 carries. Beech junior Hunter Stewart forced a fumble three plays later, with senior teammate Jeffrey Hunter recovering at the White House 18 yard line. Buc sophomore Stephen Beech had a 13-yard touchdown run to conclude the Beech scoring. Beech finished with 326 yards of total offense, 245 rushing.

The Blue Devils followed with a nine-play, 73-yard scoring drive. Back-up quarterback Grant Wicker had runs of 20 and 11 yards during the progression, which ended with Wicker lofting a 15-yard touchdown pass to senior split end Ryan O’Neal. That final scoring drive, Cope’s touchdown run and McEwen’s 33-yard reception accounted for 155 of White House’s 218 total yards. The Blue Devils were limited to eight first downs. “Our offense wasn’t doing anything in the first half, so we knew we had to step up and stop them on defense,” said Cobb. “You can’t be afraid to hit anybody. It’s being aggressive. “Every week, they (the coaches) give out an award for any hard hit we get and for the (defensive) player who plays the best. I’m trying to get it.” Crabtree added, “Defensively, we’re playing fairly well. We got beat on a double move with a pass (McEwen’s 33-yard catch) with a senior defensive back. We worked on it. That was a little disappointing, but take that away, and we played fairly well on defense. The guys are playing hard and being physical. We did a better job of tackling (on Friday). We’re moving in the right direction.” The Buccaneers have won nine of the 11 all-time meetings with White House and are currently on a four-game winning streak this season, since opening play with a 23-0 loss to visiting Smyrna. “They’re a good football team,” noted Porter. “They’re very well-coached, and they execute very well.” Both teams resume district play on Friday, with Beech playing at Portland and White House hosting Goodpasture.

Crabtree capped off a five-play 60-yard drive with a 22-yard touchdown run with 2:04 left in the first quarter. Portland did not move the ball past the Beech 35 after that point.  “Our defense has been shutting people down lately,” said Beech senior defensive lineman Marquis Kingcade. “Adjusting to the single-wing was hard. (Rodney Crabtree) is one of those guys you have to keep your eye on. If you don’t buckle down and tackle him, he’ll be gone.”  Two big returns on special teams led to Beech’s first two touchdowns.  Zinchini ran a punt back 71 yards and Haymer returned a kickoff back to the Portland 4 following Rodney Crabtree’s score. Cash punched it in a play later to give Beech the lead for good with 1:45 left in the first.

Beech extended its lead to 28-7 at halftime when Cash scored from two yards out and Fleming hauled in a 22-yarder with 2:54 left in the half. The Buccaneers completed the scoring in the third when Cash hauled in a 41-yard pass from Neal and Haymer scored from five yards out.  Portland did better in the penalty department. The Panthers had just one penalty for five yards and the Bucs had five for 50.  “We don’t feel like we played particularly well,” Coach Crabtree said. “If you don’t do the little things well when you play good teams, it’s going to bite you. We’ll have to go back and work on the fundamentals.”

The defending 5A state champions needed to thwart one last upset bid before starting the rugged stretch of their schedule. Beech took care of that in the third quarter to beat the visiting Lebanon Blue Devils 42-21 Friday for its sixth straight win. The Buccaneers (6-1 overall, 4-0 in 9-AAA) can now turn its attention to district championship-defining games against Gallatin, Hendersonville and Mt. Juliet. “I am extremely proud of our guys for responding (in the second half),” said Beech Head Coach Anthony Crabtree. “I challenged the guys to come out and finish.” The Buccaneers scored 21 points in the first 5:58 of the second half to build a comfortable 35-0 lead before Crabtree and staff inserted the reserves. The run started when Beech blocked a punt that senior Daniel Davidson snagged out of the air and returned 19 yards for a score.

The Buccaneers also received a huge lift from senior tailback Travis Haymer. Haymer played on offense for both halves after only playing in the second half the last few games for disciplinary reasons. Haymer dashed through the Lebanon defense for 195 yards on 20 carries an average of 9.75 per carry with three touchdowns. He scored from 4 and 36 yards out to give Beech its 35-0 lead.  “I hope this is a lesson to the younger players,” Haymer said. “You have to keep your head on straight and not get in trouble. It hurts really bad not playing.” Beech quarterback Jarod Neal set up Haymer’s first score in the third with a 30-yard dart to Max Zinchini. He also completed an 11-yarder to Zinchini on the drive. The Bucs then drove just 40 yards on two Haymer runs after Taylor Cash recovering a Lebanon fumble on the ensuring kickoff. Beech outgained Lebanon, 400-289 in total offense, including 223-67 at halftime. The difference came in the passing. Neal completed 5-of-8 passes for 112 yards, including four to Zinchini for 85 yards while Lebanon quarterback Pat Maynard did not complete any of his six throws. Devonte’ Cobb hauled in Neal’s other completion for 27 yards.

“I felt like we blocked a little bit better in the second half,” Crabtree said. “We did not finish blocks in the first half always like we wanted to. Travis is always going to run the ball hard. You have to give him a crease and let him go.” The Buccaneers saw 11 different players rush the ball. Neal and Stephen Beech also had rushing touchdowns for Beech. Lebanon (3-5, 1-4) tried to run outside the tackles a lot out of its spread formation. The Blue Devils outran the hosts just 289-288 but most of the yardage came after the midway point of the third. Maynard ran for 189 yards on 23 carries including a 77-yarder in the fourth quarter. “They (Blue Devil backs) are really fast so if they got outside, they’d break it for big gains,” Davidson said. “We tried to stay outside and force them inside so our linemen and linebackers could get to them.” Beech continues defense of its district crown on Friday at Gallatin. Game time is 7 p.m.
